Grandma’s Marathon: Did Not Finish

>> Saturday, June 21, 2008

Started on pace.

Started feeling “funny.”

Barfed.

Nearly fell in Lake Superior.

Started going blind.

Saw the inside of my first Medical Tent.

I'm sorry homie!! I hope you're ok now?!? You still rock no matter what ;-)

Jumper 2.0 4:49 PM, June 21, 2008

I was following you. You finished the 1/2 at a 7:09 pace then waited for the 20 mile.

and waited
and waited

something must be wrong with the transmitter at the 20 mile marker.

Then others passed it and it registered fine.

Oh no.

So sorry to hear Steve. I guess we all have to have a DNF at some point. You are proof that it happens to the best of them.

Unknown 4:59 PM, June 21, 2008

I feel like a horrible person...but I am kind of creepily looking forward to reading all the details. Sorry.

i rushed home from coaching this morning to look you up. saw the tracker and saw your predicted finish time and got all excited. then i couldn't find you in the finisher's results!! i thought it was maybe a tracking glitch similar to my race day, but alas, i've just read your update.

oh man, i am so sorry, but "started going blind" = NOT GOOD. please rest up, and i'm sure pharmie is taking excellent care of you. finish or not, you are a rock star runner, and i know you'll be back with a vengeance!!

Oh no! I'm so sorry Steve! I hope you are feeling better soon.

Anonymous,  9:16 PM, June 21, 2008

Wish you luck next time, rest up and try again.

Had a triathlon a few years back where I didn't even make it through the ocean swim. DNF - had to get drug back to shore THEN do the walk of shame back to the first transition to get my stuff.

Happens to all of us, glad you're at least alright, Grandma got you this time, but you'll get her next year.

CoachLiz 9:22 PM, June 21, 2008

OMG!!!

Rest up and get feeling better a.s.a.p.

I am sure you will let us know how it all played out and if you were right about your "1 Day Until..." post. I guess Grandma really did kick your butt!

Hang in there kiddo, you will nail it the next time. Is there another marathon around your neck of the woods within the next month???

Tri Mom 9:52 PM, June 21, 2008

RunBubbaRun 2:30 AM, June 22, 2008

Dang Steve, Sorry to hear that. I was wondering what happened to you..

Get better soon.

RobbyB 10:09 AM, June 22, 2008

Dude,

We all now what makes a champion is not how many time he falls, but how many times he gets up.

This is just another step in making your better, best.

See you soon.

Anonymous,  10:48 AM, June 22, 2008

Steve,
I have been telling you that continuously polishing your "beef bus" would make you go blind. I am sorry that it had to happen during your marathon, must have been a late night…….. Hope you feel better soon

E-Speed 11:11 AM, June 22, 2008

I'm so sorry Steve. I hope you are okay!

chia 12:31 PM, June 22, 2008

Sheesh, you mean to tell me TWO of my fav activities could make me go blind!??! Bummer. What's my next vice to go hazardous? Tell me it's not beer... please God, not BEER.

Many hopes for a quick recovery man. You are good peeps and one hell of an athlete. You'll bounce back better than Heidi Klum post partum... guaran-fricken-tee it.

Trisaratops 1:05 PM, June 22, 2008

Oh no. Poop sandwich.

I'm sorry to hear that! Rest up buddy! Take care of yourself!

Brian 1:05 PM, June 22, 2008

No worries. It happens to the best. Rest and heal up there are plenty of good fall races.

As for the going blind part I thought that was from the one activity that causes hairy palms.

Anonymous,  1:29 PM, June 22, 2008

I feel your pain. I was supposed to run Grandma's in 2006 but ended up in the hospital having my appendix taken out 3 days before! kind of like a "DNF" cuz you train so much and then it all goes down hill. I WILL run it again some year, and I have the feeling you will too :)

Rest up!

Chad 1:58 PM, June 22, 2008

Sorry to hear that. You'll get another chance.

anna jo 2:39 PM, June 22, 2008

man, I'm sorry to hear that! it's a bummer for sure, but there are always other races and other chances to achieve your dreams. you're a rock star runner and I know you'll come back from this stronger than ever.

Meg 3:44 PM, June 22, 2008

Sorry to hear about your race! I hope you are feeling better.

Michelle 5:59 PM, June 22, 2008

I am so sorry! This meant a lot to you. Try to shake it off. Give it a few days. I hope you are well now. Take care.

MissAllycat 6:53 PM, June 22, 2008

So sad! :( What a bummer, man. Hope you're doing okay...

Rainmaker 6:55 PM, June 22, 2008

Sorry man. Don't fret it - you did the right thing and stopped. There are a gazillion more marathons to run this year, get better and rock one this fall...like say the Philly Marathon with my in November. Cause we're both shooting for the same sub-3 times, and it'd be fun. Ya know ya want to...you know you do.

Viv 7:44 PM, June 22, 2008

Steve, so sorry. I was pulling for ya man. Hang in there and get rest.

Jade Lady 10:14 AM, June 23, 2008

What in the world was going on? Gees..hope you're ok....

Sunshine 7:59 PM, June 24, 2008

Glad you were able to end the day/weekend well.. with food!

Race course smells like dead animals because of all the runner barf?

Thanks for the pop-up downpours comment. We sure had a drenching one.
