Pre-Race Update

>> Friday, July 11, 2008

I was waxed. There will be pictures and a video posted Tuesday. There was one problem: this morning, I woke up all broken out. This is what I looked like when I got up this morning, all covered in zits:

I showered and scrubbed all the white-heads off. Gross. It hurt. I rubbed the special cream all over. Then I looked like this:

So if you’re coming out to watch the triathlon tomorrow, look for the person that looks like one giant herpe. (Is that proper usage of the singular form of “herpes”?) Because that will be me. Good thing I don’t embarrass easily.

So look for my race report on Sunday, and the waxing report (with video) on Tuesday. Thanks!

Now that I am done giggling at you, I do feel very sorry for you! I think there is some kind of creme you can get at the drug store for bikini line bumps...maybe it would help?

Steve Stenzel 4:37 PM, July 11, 2008

I'm rubbing creams all over!!! They're not doing a damn thing!!!

Nat 4:52 PM, July 11, 2008

Hey, it will be hot tomorrow and is stinkin' hot today. Just pretend it's heat rash. No one will no the difference. Have you had your cats lick it yet? They seem to like doing that. Maybe that would help? Good luck tomorrow to you and Pharmie!

RunnerMom 5:09 PM, July 11, 2008

In a word---Yikes! That looks painful. (See what we women go through---in other areas??)

Good luck at your race. The "one giant herpe" line had me laughing out loud. I'm sure no will notice?

Kelly 5:46 PM, July 11, 2008

OH HOLY CRAP. Are you sure you don't have the measles? Cause measles look like that too...

Formulaic 6:00 PM, July 11, 2008

DUDE!

I am so glad you didn't take the advise to go with the 'full Monty'.
[you didn't right??!!].

Anonymous,  6:07 PM, July 11, 2008

I'm totally shocked that that happened! Hopefully the cream was somewhat soothing...i guess lessoned learned about how Steve's body reacts to waxing...no way you could have predicted that!

TRI TO BE FUNNY 6:16 PM, July 11, 2008

Oh my freakin Lord that looks bad!! Now you have a slight appreciation for the Brazilian bikini wax (not that would know or anything...I'm just sayin')...

Judi 6:28 PM, July 11, 2008

That looks like you could use something like arnica cream (or if you are near a natural food store, ask for arnica tablets, it's homeopathic). Steve, you are effing nuts. Good luck Sunday! Race well! Herpe and all!

triblog carol 6:39 PM, July 11, 2008

steve, that's called razor burn, which I get when shaving the bikini area. I think it's irritated hair follicles. They sell a product at Sephora for it that is basically alcholol mixed with water and aspirin. It's so expensive, that I bought it once, and now just mix it up myself. It does sting, but works! Good luck (with the race and the razor burn)

Paulie 7:02 PM, July 11, 2008

The first time you get waxed the skin is very sensitive, but each successive time you get less and less of a reaction as the follicles harden up.

To treat the bumps use Tend Skin. It will eliminate the bumps in a day or two.

Unknown 7:12 PM, July 11, 2008

eeee gads, that looks painful!

i'm guessing you won't repeat the waxing experiment in the future?

Tyger Lily 7:43 PM, July 11, 2008

YIKES!!! Another great product is Skin Food by Weleda.

Good luck!

J~Mom 7:49 PM, July 11, 2008

DOOD!! I am so sorry!! Ouchie!

Born To Endure 7:50 PM, July 11, 2008

WTF?? I've never ever seen anything like that..I hope you're not in pain!!

bigmike600 7:58 PM, July 11, 2008

Shaving cream....1 dollar

disposable razors....4 dollars

aftershave lotion....5 dollars

Seeing that picture of you...priceless.

Dude that looks like it hurt...bad.

Ian 8:01 PM, July 11, 2008

I'm so glad that this happened to you. I mean that sucks for you but last time I waxed something the same thing happened to me and I thought I was a freak. Turns out it happens to other people too!

21stCenturyMom 8:04 PM, July 11, 2008

You can't fix that with just any old cream. I'm telling you - mix a little rubbing alcohol in with the cream and use that. It may sting but it will help. I don't know about aspirin although I suppose the salicylic acid might help.

You poor thing. I hope it all clears up tomorrow.

Unknown 8:22 PM, July 11, 2008

That is wrong on so many levels. Another good reason to stick to trail running. No need to wax.

Kevin 8:38 PM, July 11, 2008

Yowza! You wont catch me doing that. Ouch.

xt4 8:40 PM, July 11, 2008

Great googly moogly, that is some extraordinary stuff. May the force be with you!

Molly 9:42 PM, July 11, 2008

I am serious about Tend Skin. It is a real product. It is a liquid solution, like a toner. We have sikilar skin types and I HAVE to use this stuff to avoid the bumpies. It will sting...I use it and then follow it with an intence moisturizer. Hope that helps some!
I feel for you...I have been there!
TAKE CARE

Chad 9:46 PM, July 11, 2008

Dude, what is wrong with good ole' shavin'. That looks painful. Don't know about that whole alcohol, water and aspirin mixture someone was talking about. I think alcohol would be the last thing I would want on that degree of wax burn.

Tracy 9:47 PM, July 11, 2008

Jesus Steve. You actually did it this time, full. blown. wave. of. nausea. here. OK BUT, let's fix this -- my mom is like this Italian gypsie skin diva:

Go and get some egg yolks, raw, maybe two. Mix them with a little baking soda. Make a paste. Put this on your skin and let it dry. Use a warm wet wash cloth and PAT it off. Then use a cold wet wash cloth and pat it again. Then pat it dry. Dabbing Visine on it will also help with the red.

Wait, dude isn't you're wife like a medically licensed pharmacist?? What the hell am I telling you any of this for... PHARMIE to the rescue!

MtngirlinCali 10:32 PM, July 11, 2008

OMG, I just spit up my Diet Coke. I feel guilty laughing at your photos because I've been there before. You and that aesthetician need to part company because your body hates her wax!! I once had to go on antibiotics because of a botched wax job. :)

On the bright side, at least it's not on a critical body part for racing. Is it too late for the toothpaste trick?

Good luck in your race this weekend-- can't wait to read the report!

Bob - BlogMYruns.com 11:11 PM, July 11, 2008

Steve in a Speedo?! Gross! umm this might replace the speedo for grossness umm nah speedo still worse :-)

best wishes on ur race, I wouldn't wear a white top !

MissAllycat 11:32 PM, July 11, 2008

Holy Crap, Steve. That looks like it sucks. But you'll be as smooth as a baby's ass in a few days when the bumps go away.

Good luck tomorrow!! I'll be looking for you!

Calyx Meredith 8:23 AM, July 12, 2008

Another thing that will help next time (but lordy I cannot imagine you would want a next time) is to make sure and wash/scrub with a gentle but good cleanser before the wax. That helps get the oil out of the follicles before and makes you less likely to break out after. (Although a different kind of wax might be better too. Some people react to the wax itself.)
You ARE going to wear a shirt in the race...aren't you?

Christie 8:26 AM, July 12, 2008

Oh man. Sorry to hear about your break out. Good luck on your race though.

SM 8:46 AM, July 12, 2008

Dude that just sucks...Good luck tomorrow!!!!

ShirleyPerly 9:24 AM, July 12, 2008

OMG! I hadn't thought of that being a problem. If you decide to go shirtless, perhaps people will give you a wider berth and let you go by them :-)

K 11:26 AM, July 12, 2008

Try some ice and vasaline on it. That will help lower the bumps and smoothe them out. Damn. That.is. icky.

Marcy 12:26 PM, July 12, 2008

oh my gawd! Dude! How about you do your balls next :P

Darrell 1:25 PM, July 12, 2008

A "good" idea gone wrong. Sorry for laughing but I can't help it. You can't hear me, right?

Have a great race.

Brian 1:42 PM, July 12, 2008

Oh. that's horrible. That's reason enough to never get it done. Why do I look forward more to the waxing video than the tri video?

E-Speed 2:27 PM, July 12, 2008

OMG Steve. I have no idea how to even comment on that. I'm so sorry man. Looks like waxing is not for you! I'm extremely grateful that doesn't happen when I get my eyebrows done!

Collin Kromke 3:04 PM, July 12, 2008

Was there a Nair for Men shortage?

Smithposts... 4:12 PM, July 12, 2008

Oh wow, that looks uncomfortable. Maybe waxing is not a good idea for you. Keep your shirt on this weekend or wear "the bowl full of sunshine" to distract.

Mendy 7:06 PM, July 12, 2008

Holy Moly! Steve.... Yowza... that must hurt. I feel so bad for you. Poor thing.

triguyjt 8:26 PM, July 12, 2008

does pharmie know about this???

I'll say a prayer for ya

N.D. 8:47 PM, July 12, 2008

ouuccch. Good luck!

Tri Mom 10:12 PM, July 12, 2008

oh my god Steve! Man...I feel bad for you, but I know you'll tear up that course! Good luck!

KK 11:06 PM, July 12, 2008

Yikes! I bet it hurt twice as bad as it looks (and it looks BAD). Sorry for your pain. I bet you raced well because of it though!

Ryan 3:59 AM, July 13, 2008

You say you've got the "herp" like that's a bad thing!

Celebrate the HERP!!!!!!!!!!

:) 12:22 PM, July 13, 2008

OMIGOD. :barf:

Poor poor steve...

Unknown 7:56 PM, July 13, 2008

Nurse Jenny says...I believe you would use the term "herpetic Lesion". That is how I would describe that if I were to be charting it.
Good luck with all that .... wow.

Jamie 8:23 AM, July 14, 2008

I second the "herpetic lesion" or "herpes sore".

Thanks for being the guinea pig. I feel like my skin would have the exact same reaction...

At least you know to stick with shaving! Can't wait for the video.

sRod 1:33 PM, July 14, 2008

I didn't think it was possible to scream and vomit at the same time...until now. You are a champ.
