Running in the Metrodome and Weekend Intervals

>> Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Last night I got home late, and I nearly missed my workout. Pharmie came home 5 minutes after me, and she said she was headed to the Metrodome (home of the Vikings and Twins) for MDRA’s Dome Running. So I tagged along.

The Minnesota Distance Running Association opens the dome 2 nights a week for runners to run laps on the 2nd concourse. It’s open all winter, and it just costs A BUCK!! AND we get to take in the scent of stale catsup and mustard for the whole run!!

Here’s 2 (blurry) photos that I snapped as soon as we got there:

Slower runners going counter-clockwise on the outside

Faster runners going clockwise on the inside

They have signs all over marking the distances. The inner loop is for sub-7:00/mile, and the outer loop is for 7:00+/mile. Pharmie was going to do 1-lap intervals, and I was going to run 14 laps, which equaled 5.26 miles at a tempo pace.

Here are my splits for each lap:
(Note that 2:20 / lap equals 6:13 / mile)
2:14
2:22
2:21
2:24
2:25
2:25
2:26 - 16:39 first half
2:24
2:22
2:23
2:20
2:19
2:18
2:11 - 16:21 last half
33:00 for the 5.26 miles (6:16 / mile pace)

My heel is a little sore from pounding on the concrete, but it will be nice to get in a faster, warmer, non-icy run now and then at the Dome. I hope to go about 2 times each month. We’ll see...

In other news, we’ve got another group together to run intervals and/or stairs at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. We’re meeting at 9 am on Saturday at the track. We’ll run intervals (or whatever) on the track for a bit, and then we might do a Crossfit-inspired stairs/push-ups/sit-ups workout. I’ve contacted a lot of “the locals” already, but let me know if you’d like more info! It should be fun!!

p.s. I’m rooting for Analeigh right now to win ANTM!! Go Analeigh!! (Update: Analeigh got 3rd. She was robbed. Boo.)

that's such a great idea to be able to run in the Dome... especially during the winter! And a buck! That's awesome! :)

That would be GREAT. Get in some dry winter running. Plus I'm a big Twins and Vikings fan.

That concrete floor makes my feets hurt thinking about it. Better people than I ;-).

ncrunner12 8:51 PM, November 19, 2008

That's pretty sweet that they open the dome up for running. I really like what you're doing with your area runners and putting together these group runs... wicked cool of you man.

LoveOfShoes 8:55 PM, November 19, 2008

As an already admitted reality-TV junkie, I have to admit that was one of the most anit-climactic finales of ANTM ever...don't you agree?
I am sad to say the show may be past its prime

Michelle 9:08 PM, November 19, 2008

What is ANTM???? I have no clue!!

As far as running, you rock Steve!!!

nwgdc 9:34 PM, November 19, 2008

I'm running an indoor marathon in January (indoormarathon.com) so perhaps I need to get some of this training in...sooner than later!

I can't imagine having splits available every 2-3 minutes!

Carly 10:11 PM, November 19, 2008

I so need to get on that. I am a cold wimp.

Marci 10:11 PM, November 19, 2008

Running in the Metrodome... so neat :)

Jess 10:46 PM, November 19, 2008

What is ANTM?

Anyhoo, that's nice that the metrodome provides that to runners! I bet it gets a lot of use.

Dori 12:38 AM, November 20, 2008

Good job! I could never bring myself to run on concrete.

Julianne 1:37 AM, November 20, 2008

You are so lucky to have access to the dome to run around in!

duchossois 5:03 AM, November 20, 2008

Lucky. I have to run my intervals outside, in the snow and cold.

teacherwoman 6:41 AM, November 20, 2008

Oh I know that smell of the metrodome! Sounds like an interesting (and different) place to go for a run!

J 6:50 AM, November 20, 2008

I TOTALLY agree about Analeigh and ANTM!!!! I was soo upset! Great job on the run - that is cool they open the Dome for running!

Pretty cool that you got another group together. Stair and track workouts are always better with others.

Very very cool. I'm a little astounded that they call over 7:00min miles "Slow"

Brooke 8:41 AM, November 20, 2008

OMG- totally agree on ANTM...I knew McKey would win but thought final two would definitely be her and Annaleigh! (And Annaleigh should have won but i knew they'd pick McKey). Sam is just so BLAH and both of their walks sucked...the show hasn't been as good lately. I'm sure Annaleigh will be signed. Ok- enough dorkin' out over ANTM...and don't get me started on Vicki on the biggest loser...

Renee 9:02 AM, November 20, 2008

What a great idea! Luckily it seldom gets cold enough here to warrant that, but in case it does, I am already thinking about places that might let us do the same thing! Beats running on the treadmill for sure!

Unknown 9:07 AM, November 20, 2008

That is a great idea they had. It must be nice to get inside during the winter months and run on something other than a treadmill.

How slippery is that floor?

Marcy 9:22 AM, November 20, 2008

That's SOOOO cool that you guys are able to run that. Although I bet it's real fun practicing snot rockets in there :P

joyRuN 9:23 AM, November 20, 2008

I was going to say that sounds really cool, until I saw the pics with that very hard-looking floor!

Jeff 9:52 AM, November 20, 2008

At least they found some good use for that building.

For a second I got excited. Thought we'd get Caribbean pics from THAT U of St. Thomas. What the hell's it doing in St. Paul?

M*J*C 10:11 AM, November 20, 2008

Good for you! That's a great idea, and only a buck...can't beat that!

E-Speed 10:33 AM, November 20, 2008

Hello Steve where was the ANTM Spoiler alert? How was I to have any clue you would be the source of me finding out the ANTM results before the torrent was up? ;) I had a feeling it would play out the way it did, but you are right Analeigh was robbed.

ShirleyPerly 12:24 PM, November 20, 2008

Sounds fun! I'm amazed at what you folks up north do to stay active during the cold winters. Look forward to experiencing it myself soon.

Darcy Franklin 2:00 PM, November 20, 2008

It took me awhile to figure out what ANTM was. Definitely glad I don't watch that!

Seriously, this Sat try the 50 squats, sprint 400 x4. Super fun all for time.

Judi 3:13 PM, November 20, 2008

i don't like that dome for running for some reason....

Ryan 3:14 PM, November 20, 2008

It is kind of like "mall walking" just a little sportier though.

J~Mom 5:22 PM, November 20, 2008

That is a crazy spot to run!! Whatevah gets the job done though!

libgyrl 7:01 PM, November 20, 2008

analeigh was totally robbed! (and don't you think mckey looks like herman munster?)

i'm registered for IM Madison 2009...will you be doing WIBA?

Chic Runner 7:01 PM, November 20, 2008

That's a really, really cool but very odd deal about running there. :) And ANTM? WHO ARE YOU?! ha ha just kidding. Ps. I like your NEW SICK RIBBON! CONGRATS WINNER

CoachLiz 8:38 PM, November 20, 2008

What a cool idea to put the facility to use and get people off their duff and exercising in the winter!

RoadBunner 11:48 PM, November 21, 2008

What an awesome running venue. Sort of reminds me of the opposite of my aunt going to the indoor mall in Hawaii to do her walks in the air conditioning.

Jade Lady 8:08 PM, November 22, 2008

What a great way to stay fit in the winter time. For a buck, that's a great venue.
