St. Paul Winter Carnival 10K Photos!

>> Monday, February 02, 2009

Late last week, the photos came in from the St. Paul Winter Carnival Half Marathon 10K (shortened due to the cold). Below are some good ones.

I found Pharmie, Borsch, and myself in the lobby after getting our numbers. Look to the far upper left. That’s Borsch and I chatting, and Pharmie with her head down pinning on her number:

This is just after the start, and you can see me in grey on the right:

I couldn’t find photos of our whole crew, but I found some. Here’s BaddApple part way into his 5K:

And here’s Badd’s son his way to a 2 minute 5K PR!

Here’s Jen flying during the 10K:

And at the finish of the 10K, here’s Pharmie bringing it home:

And here I am coming to the line:

That’s a pretty weird finishers photo. My head and gloves are covered with ice. I have a camera dangling from my wrist (I held it during the run, I just let it fly at the end so I could hit my watch). And remember the “duct tape shoe warming” trick that I talked about in my race report? Well, I can’t just throw away a perfectly good roll of duct tape after using it! So I wore the roll as a bracelet for the length of the race. Weird, I know.

Also, the finishers list has been updated, and I moved up a spot to 17th overall (which is 6th out of 43 in my age group). They also upped the number of 10.25 K runners to 734. So I can’t complain (even though I wanted to run that faster). Here’s the updated list:

Here are some other random/great photos from the race. The police volunteers were actually high-5ing the runners! I’ve never seen that before, and I think that’s awesome!

When Borsch and I were standing around at the finish, we were admiring the CLOUDS of breath we would see coming out of the runners. That’s what happens when warm, moist air hits -10 air.

There's "crazy," and then there's "just plain dumb." This guy might be the latter. (Remember, it was around -10 with a wind chill that knocked it down to about -25.) He ran it with bare legs under a kilt, 1 sweatshirt, no gloves, and no hat. He may be dead by now:

And check out all this sweet “ice art:”

This guy looks crazy!

Oh my.

I talked to this guy at the turn-around.
I will never forget that goatee.

That's all folks! Now, who wants to come to MN and do the half marathon with me next year?!? I'll be there!

Remember I'm from the south and consider a 32 degree cold as hell, so can I possibly consider a race in the summer?

I still think your photo finish "ice man" picture is the best!

damn.

most of my relatives live in mpls and that place is just TOO COLD for this Texan.

They should hold a race in the Mall of America!

OMG, there is more than crazy kilt guy without gloves on!!! The guy in the purple track suit is scary looking--like Beelzebub.

Good on ya for carrying all that stuff and still cracking out a good run time.

ShirleyPerly 8:47 AM, February 02, 2009

Duct tape on the wrist!? Sounds like pure genius to me!

Dude, that guy in the purple just looks scary. It would only be better if he was one of those really loud grunters when he runs. Uhhhhhh, Gahhhhh, Uhhhh, Gahhhh.

tfh 10:22 AM, February 02, 2009

I too love the duct tape bracelet. Is anyone else wondering if kilt dude was wearing anything beneath his kilt?

Amy - the gazelle 10:52 AM, February 02, 2009

I left South Dakota for a reason - and that reason was winter. Maybe when global warming kicks in, I will consider a winter race :)

Bootchez 12:14 PM, February 02, 2009

I keep thinking it's cold here in Northern California, but in comparison it's probably downright balmy! The clouds, the ice, the faces . . . . brrr! Oh, and thanks for stopping by . . .

Chic Runner 12:53 PM, February 02, 2009

these are hilarious, so glad you shared them all. you runners in the midwest are so hardcore!

Jeff 1:03 PM, February 02, 2009

I'm certain that guy in purple is an off duty mall Santa slimming down for summer. I think I saw him at Mall of America a coupla years ago.

Casey 1:17 PM, February 02, 2009

This is a great post. IThose photos made me laugh out loud sitting here at my desk. Bravo!

Anonymous,  1:18 PM, February 02, 2009

None of the bars around there would serve him....

Used to be a professor (ha!), till some quack stole his blog....

Michelle 1:25 PM, February 02, 2009

Great photos dude!!! The crazy guy scares me a bit!!!

NOT YOU!!!

I would love to run half marathon with you!! Well not with you, but the same race!! You, of course finishing like 2 hours before me!!!

Perhaps my TOE will be healed by then????

Southbaygirl 3:42 PM, February 02, 2009

OMG...that looks SO COLD!!!!!

BaddApple 5:15 PM, February 02, 2009

I just want to point out I was moving much faster than the picture makes me look. :-) I think they were using a super high shutter speed or some technical photography thing that Steve would take a whole day to blog about.

On the other hand, did you see my boy Ryan!

Dori 5:56 PM, February 02, 2009

Nothing gives you bragging rights like running in a Minnesota winter. Good job on your finish! My coldest race was 3 below for the Valentine's 5k; I still talk about that one.

Who is Thea Fleming (#9)? If she's not on Team Minnesota, she should be!

jen walters 6:57 PM, February 02, 2009

OMG! That "ice art" is INSANE!!!

Now, I took pics of an ice storm... but not me running in the ice storm... LOL.

It's great to see how hard core you guys are up in Minnesota. :)

Lindsay 7:11 PM, February 02, 2009

chia 9:12 PM, February 02, 2009

I wonder what mile kilt-boy lost his shishkabobs and doodle-buddies :-)

Runner Leana 10:18 PM, February 02, 2009

Those pictures are fantastic! That guy running in the kilt? I'm cold just looking at him!!

Brianna 11:00 PM, February 02, 2009

There's just nothing like the bitter cold to get you moving for a PR! I THOUGHT those were ice crystals on the beards in the early photos - I'm glad you confirmed it with the later ones. Holy moly!

Sarah 12:31 AM, February 03, 2009

That is EXACTLY why I didn't move to MN 4 years ago when I had the chance. Whew!

joyRuN 12:39 AM, February 03, 2009

Dude! The shorts in ice art weather is insane!!

Ali 8:19 AM, February 03, 2009

Run for your life, the Ice Zombies are coming to freeze you!

Great pictures.

Marci 12:42 PM, February 03, 2009

Wow... you look absolutely frozen in that picture of you coming to the finish... in fact so does everyone else! If it was ever that cold race day... I'd so bag it!

Anonymous,  10:22 AM, February 04, 2009

That is awesome! Good for you! :D I run in the cold all the time, I live in Ohio, I have no choice. LOL But I still get flack for it sometimes. I just did my first 5K through 6inches of snow. Meh! But I did it!

Awesome blog. :)

My Life 9:57 PM, February 04, 2009

There is a whole different breed of people up there where you're at... wow.

RooBabs 1:54 PM, February 12, 2009

Hi Steve, I'm back to play catch-up! Man that looks cold- unbelievable! I can't believe that guy in the kilt, but my favorite is the guy in the purple with the weird joker hat. That is awesome!!

Great job on your finish time.
